Why Ponsonby signage is its own brief
A lot of Ponsonby sits within Auckland Council's Special Character areas, which can bring extra rules around what's allowed on a heritage shopfront — projecting signs, fascia treatments and even colour can be subject to design guidelines. We're used to working around that rather than finding out about it after a job's already been fabricated.
The suburb's retail and hospitality mix — cafes, bars, boutiques, salons — tends to favour signage that reads as part of the shop's fit-out: hand-finished lettering, subtle window frosting, illuminated fascia signs sized to suit a narrow shopfront rather than a big-box format.
Foot traffic is the dominant audience here, not passing cars, which changes what "readable" means — signage pitched for someone walking past on the footpath rather than driving at 50km/h.
